His Eye Is On The Sparrow (with "The King Of Love My Shepherd Is") (String Quartet and Piano)
By Traditional, Charles H. Gabriel, arr. Stephen DeCesare
For string quartet
Includes score and parts
Written for Piano, Flute, Clarinet and String Quartet This piece takes you on a journey on a magical river. With beautiful melodies and shimmering harmonies, the piece creates a balance stasis and change as well as repetition and variation. The piece moves from one key area to the next creating constant contrast between sections yet crafting smooth transitions that reflect the fluidity of the river journey the piece portrays. Writing this piece, I was especially inspired by the music from the Romantic and Impressionist periods that I have grown to love. I emphasized this attempt to imitate the emotion of this era through its chordal structure as well as expressive long played out strings with vibrato. The instrumentation of the piece comes from Ravel's Introduction and Allegro for Harp, Flute, Clarinet and String Quartet. I love the sound that the instruments produced together how they fit around each other so well. Unfortunately, as much as I wish I did, I do not know how to play the Harp and instead chose the Piano to replace it because of its similar nature. For this piece, I was also inspired by my personal experiences river rafting in Colorado when I was young as many of the rivers usually speed up and slow down often. I loved to imagine that I was in a magical world as a kid and it gave me a fun game to play going down the river. The purpose of this piece is to bring the listener to this new world and have them feel as if they are traveling down a magical river just like the one I imagined.
