As simple as it was, this was the song that got me into writing music for theater. The first version of this song was written in 2015 for Dr. Lloyd Rodgers during my time at Cal State Fullerton. For some reason, of all the people he had given this text to, none ever tried to put it in a major key, which was bizarre to me. Even after working on multiple Shakespeare productions, I am no master of early modern English, but the subtext of Full Fathom Five always said to me that Ariel very much enjoyed tormenting Ferdinand. Three years later, I had the opportunity to sound design a production of The Tempest at the Long Beach Playhouse, so I offered this song, as well as offering my services to create more music for the production. The director, Mary Schaugh, herself a talented soprano, accepted my offer with a similarly high level of eagerness to mine. The rest, they say, is history.
