For Low Voice and Piano This piece comes from a collection of songs originally written for a virtual production of William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night by All The World's A Stage in Summer of 2020. This was the first piece written for this production. Because of its simple, repeating structure and its placement within the narrative, I felt the most comfortable getting my feet wet here, and how it came out really gave me confidence going forward with the other songs. Within the play, Duke Orsino requests that Feste sings this song, calling it "silly sooth", as well as "old and plain". Despite this, he seems to have a large fondness for the song, and I believe this is because, having a proclivity toward silly sooth himself and an eagerness to find it, he relates to the song, both textually and musically. That was where the first line came into my head - one that leaps upward in simple chordal notes, and gets faster, showing the same simplicity and eagerness that our good Duke shows throughout the play.
