I initially met Claire through the University Wind Ensemble, unaware that she and I lived on the same floor in the residence halls at UCSB. We have been close friends ever since we figured that out. Once she learned I was a composer, she asked me to write something for bassoon. I was working on another piece at the time, but my instructor at the time told me that the project was too tonal and predictable. He urged me to try again with a different approach. Rather than scrapping the melody I was already attached to, I thought of Claire and decided to use it twice: the new version turned into Clockwork and the original version turned into Claire’s Shadow.
